Familial Relationships—a strange love triangle.
There are three major players in the Black Collar Syndicate.
Seth Morgan, the exiled heir who comes home to find his family falling apart.
Caleb Morgan, the golden prince, and Seth’s older brother, left behind and furious.
Emma Morgan, the favorite, the only daughter, cousin to the brothers and overlooked by the family.
There are others. Vera, Nic, Rama, Mikie, and the list goes on. And each is important, in their way. The story wouldn’t function without them.
But the story would completely fall apart without Seth, Emma and Caleb. Without the love triangle that exists between these three, the story would fall apart.
Wait, I hear you say. Love triangle. But they’re related.
I know. Believe me, I aware of just how incesty that could get. Here’s the thing. There is a love triangle between Seth and Caleb and Emma. It’s just very platonic.
Emma is defined by her love for her cousins. It’s who she is. Informs every choice she makes—even when she makes choices that would infuriate them (which is often. She’s a Morgan, after all.) Every move Seth makes in Black Collar Empire is because of his brother, and the unresolved relationship they have. And Caleb—Caleb we get to know in the novella, Black Collar Beginnings: New York. He plays a very small part in Empire. And of the three, he’s the hardest to get a grip on he’s the hardest to understand his motivations. But even when he is hard to read, what is very clear is that he loves his cousin, and his brother.
Sometimes, love doesn’t need to be sex and flowers. It doesn’t have to be tongue tied attraction—although there is the small does of that puppy love from Emma on occasion. Sometimes, it’s just about the people next to you, and the fact that you would take a bullet for them, and walk through fire to protect them. Caleb describes a relationship that Seth has, in Black Collar Beginnings: New York
There was love, deep and unshakable. The world spun for a love like that, love that burned so fierce it left scars even when it was gentle.
It’s a description that can also be applied to these three. Nothing is easy between them. They fight. They hurt each other. But when it comes down to it, they take care of each other, because that’s what family does. And because they love each other.
